Berwickshire Marine Reserve launched a small lobster hatchery as an educational resource, designed to engage the public and support marine awareness.
However, the team were new to lobster hatchery operation and faced several practical constraints:
-
No prior lobster aquaculture experience
-
Very limited physical space for a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS)
-
Only a small number of berried hens available
-
A strong reliance on good larval survival to produce any juveniles at all
With limited room for error, the challenge was to maximise survival and learning value from a compact, first-season setup.
